Write better pages

Give the homepage one clear job.

A homepage usually needs to orient a new visitor, make the website’s purpose clear and help them reach the right next page. It does not need to explain every detail about the business.

Explain relevance quickly

Near the top, say who the business helps, what problem or category it addresses and why a visitor should continue. Use ordinary words that a new visitor can understand.

Direct visitors to their next question

Use a small number of meaningful links to services, products, practical information or an appropriate contact route. Navigation labels should say what the visitor will find.

Practical checklist

  • A specific H1.
  • A plain-language introduction.
  • Links to the most important next pages.
  • Evidence that supports the main message.
  • No outdated promotions or unsupported claims.

Keep the detail on the right page

A homepage is a signpost, not a storage room. Move detailed explanations to focused pages and link to them with descriptive anchor text.
